Crossing Into Ghana Was Incredible 🇬🇭 Roads, People, Accra Madness
Leaving Abidjan, I continued east along the coast toward the border with Ghana. The route offered some of the most impressive coastal scenery of the journey so far, with the Atlantic appearing beside the road, palm-lined stretches, small communities and wide views across the shoreline. After the intensity of Abidjan, the ride felt open and refreshing.
Crossing into Ghana marked another major milestone. The first stage took me toward Takoradi, where I stopped for the night before continuing to Accra. The coastal landscape remained a highlight, and parts of the route were genuinely beautiful. The combination of ocean views, tropical vegetation and smaller towns made the early kilometres in Ghana feel promising.
The following day, however, the road toward Accra became far more difficult. Long sections were badly damaged, with deep potholes, broken tarmac and heavy traffic making progress slow and exhausting. Some of the roads were among the worst I had encountered anywhere in Africa up to that point. Constantly avoiding holes while dealing with trucks, taxis and local traffic turned what should have been a straightforward ride into another serious test of concentration.
Once I finally reached Accra, everything changed. The difficult ride gave way to a city with a completely different atmosphere, and the place where I stayed for the next four days became one of the most memorable experiences of the entire journey. It was more than simply accommodation—it was the kind of place and experience that stays with you long after leaving.
The extended stay in Accra was also necessary for practical reasons. I needed to organise visas for the countries still ahead, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon, along with the remaining stages of the route. Visa applications had become an essential part of travelling across West and Central Africa, requiring time, patience and careful planning.
This episode captured the extremes of the journey perfectly. It began with beautiful coastal roads and the excitement of entering Ghana, descended into some of the worst riding conditions I had experienced, and ended with four unforgettable days in Accra. The road was punishing, but the arrival made the struggle worthwhile.
I’ll be documenting this adventure along the way — the good, the bad, and everything in between. If you want to ride with me through Africa’s deserts, mountains, chaos, and calm, you can follow the journey on Instagram, and TikTok. I’ll be sharing stories from the road, raw moments, and the reality behind chasing freedom on two wheels.
So, come along for the ride — the long way through Africa.
Peace!
