This Country Deserves More Attention | 🇨🇲 Cameroon by Motorcycle

After entering Cameroon from Nigeria, the journey continued deeper into one of the most challenging and rewarding countries of the expedition. Cameroon quickly showed why it is considered the gateway between West and Central Africa—vast distances, dense forests, unpredictable roads and landscapes that constantly changed.

One of the most memorable sections of the ride was reaching Beau, followed by the journey toward Douala. The roads, weather and conditions tested both the motorcycle and my patience, but the scenery made every difficult kilometre worthwhile. Riding through Cameroon meant moving between remote areas, small villages and increasingly busy urban centres, experiencing completely different sides of the country in a short period of time.

Arriving in Douala, Cameroon’s largest city and economic capital, was another major transition. After days of remote riding, forests and quieter roads, the city brought back the familiar chaos of African urban life—traffic, noise, people and constant movement. It was a reminder of how quickly the environment can change when travelling across this continent.

From Douala, I continued to Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. After so many demanding riding days, I decided to slow down and stay for three nights. It was a much-needed break to rest, recover, organise my thoughts and spend time editing the journey so far. Long-distance motorcycle travel is not only about riding; moments of stopping and regrouping are just as important.

Once I was ready to continue, I left Yaoundé and turned south toward the Congo border. The road became quieter again as I moved away from the capital and deeper into the country’s southern regions. The landscape became increasingly tropical, with dense vegetation, smaller settlements and a feeling of returning to the remoteness that had defined so much of the expedition.

Eventually, I reached Ntam, a small border village in southern Cameroon. It was the final stop before entering the Republic of the Congo, marking another huge milestone in the journey. After crossing Morocco, Mauritania and the countries of West Africa, I was now approaching one of the places I had been most curious about—the heart of Central Africa.

This chapter through Cameroon was a true adventure in every sense. It included security concerns, difficult roads, huge cities, moments of rest and long stretches of isolation. Cameroon challenged me, but it also rewarded me with some of the most beautiful and memorable riding of the entire African journey. The next border crossing would take me into Congo—a country many travellers consider one of the most difficult places to explore by road.
