BENIN Blew Me Away — Epic Scenery & Exploring Cotonou by Motorcycle

Leaving Togo, I continued east into Benin, another new country and another completely different experience on the journey across Africa. After several intense stages through West Africa, Benin immediately felt welcoming, vibrant and full of character.

My destination was Cotonou, the country’s largest city and economic centre. The ride into the city introduced me to a different side of West Africa—busy streets, colourful markets, motorcycles everywhere and the constant movement that gives these cities their unique energy. Despite the chaos that comes with any major African city, Cotonou had a rhythm that was easy to enjoy.

While exploring the city, I visited one of its most famous landmarks: the Amazon Warrior statue. The monument pays tribute to the legendary Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military unit from the historic Kingdom of Dahomey known for their strength, discipline and role in the region’s history. Standing in front of the statue was a reminder that Benin’s story is deeply connected to powerful traditions and a fascinating past.

I also experienced Cotonou in a more local way by taking a ride in a tuk-tuk through the city. Away from the motorcycle, it was a chance to simply sit back, observe and experience the streets from a different perspective. The sounds, traffic, people and everyday scenes created the kind of moments that often become the most memorable parts of travelling.

What surprised me most about Benin was how much I enjoyed the country. It was not just about the sights—it was the atmosphere, the people and the feeling of being somewhere that still felt authentic and full of life. After many challenging kilometres across Africa, Benin felt like a place where I could slow down, explore and genuinely enjoy the journey again.

Cotonou became one of those unexpected stops that left a much bigger impression than planned. Sometimes the countries you pass through quickly end up becoming some of the most enjoyable chapters of the adventure.
