Riding Solo Into Nigeria 🇳🇬: Africa's Wildest Country

Leaving Benin behind, I continued east toward one of the biggest and most intense countries on the African continent: Nigeria. After enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Cotonou, the transition into Nigeria was immediate. The roads became busier, the traffic heavier and the overall pace of life increased dramatically.

Crossing into Nigeria felt like entering another world. The country is enormous, densely populated and constantly moving. From the first kilometres, it was clear that riding here would require a completely different level of concentration. Traffic rules seemed more like suggestions, vehicles moved unpredictably and every gap on the road was quickly filled by cars, motorcycles and pedestrians.

The ride toward Lagos was an intense experience. Drivers and riders often showed little patience, overtaking from all directions and leaving very little room for mistakes. On a fully loaded 2023 Honda Africa Twin DCT, surrounded by chaotic traffic and thousands of other road users, every kilometre demanded attention.

But that chaos is also part of what makes Nigeria fascinating. The roads were crowded because the country itself is full of energy. Markets, businesses, people and vehicles created a constant flow of movement. It could be exhausting, but it was also impossible to ignore the incredible scale and intensity of everyday life.

Eventually, I reached Lagos, one of the largest cities in Africa and a place famous for its size, traffic and unstoppable energy. The city immediately lived up to its reputation—massive, crowded and overwhelming. After travelling through quieter countries and remote landscapes, arriving in Lagos felt like being thrown into the deep end.

Nigeria was not an easy country to ride through, but it was unforgettable. It challenged my patience, concentration and riding skills, yet it also showed another side of Africa—one defined by ambition, speed and millions of people constantly moving forward. Lagos was chaotic, unpredictable and exhausting, but it was also one of the most memorable stops of the entire journey.
