My First Motorcycle Fall Ever – In the Sahara, Mauritania 🇲🇷

Leaving Nouadhibou behind, I continued deeper into Mauritania, facing long desert roads, powerful crosswinds and sand constantly drifting across the tarmac. The distances between settlements were growing, traffic was becoming scarce and the environment felt increasingly unforgiving. This was the Sahara in its rawest form: open, exposed and offering very little room for error.

The road conditions changed constantly. Some sections were smooth and easy to ride, while others were damaged, narrow or partly buried beneath loose sand. Strong gusts made controlling the motorcycle difficult, especially when passing trucks or moving close to the edge of the road. Riding a heavily loaded Africa Twin through these conditions demanded complete concentration.

Eventually, the combination of unstable ground and the motorcycle’s weight caught me out, resulting in my first motorcycle fall. It was not a dramatic high-speed crash, but in the middle of the Sahara, even a simple fall becomes a serious problem. Lifting a fully loaded motorcycle alone in deep sand is exhausting, and there is always the possibility of damaging something essential when help may be many kilometres away.

Fortunately, both the motorcycle and I were able to continue. The incident was a reminder that adventure riding is not defined only by spectacular scenery and open roads. It also involves fatigue, mistakes and moments when the environment exposes your limitations. Mauritania was already proving to be one of the most demanding parts of the journey, but it was also exactly the kind of challenge I had come to Africa to experience.

I’ll be documenting this adventure along the way — the good, the bad, and everything in between. If you want to ride with me through Africa’s deserts, mountains, chaos, and calm, you can follow the journey on Instagram, and TikTok. I’ll be sharing stories from the road, raw moments, and the reality behind chasing freedom on two wheels.

So, come along for the ride — the long way through Africa.

Peace!
