One of the Greatest Natural Wonders | Eye of the Sahara 🇲🇷

After riding to Atar, I left the motorcycle there and hired a local driver with a 4x4 to take me deeper into Mauritania’s Adrar region. We travelled first to Ouadane, where I spent the night before continuing toward one of the country’s most remarkable landscapes.

Early the next morning, we set off for the Eye of the Sahara, also known as the Richat Structure. Reaching it required crossing rough desert tracks and wide stretches of rocky terrain. From satellite images, the formation looks like a perfect giant circle, but from ground level it feels completely different. Instead of seeing one obvious “eye,” you move through huge ridges, exposed rock and open desert that only hint at the true scale of the structure.

After returning to Ouadane, we picked up another traveller from Greece and a child travelling with her. From there, all of us continued together to the Oasis de Tanouchert, where palm trees and signs of life stood in sharp contrast to the barren desert surrounding it.

The final stop was Chinguetti, one of Mauritania’s most historic towns. Its old stone buildings, narrow lanes and ancient manuscript libraries made it feel like a place preserved from another era. By the end of the journey, the day had become much more than a visit to one geological landmark. It was a complete route through Ouadane, the Eye of the Sahara, Tanouchert and Chinguetti—combining desert, history and unexpected company along the way.
