Prologue: Into The Unknown

Getting used to my new motorcycle, a 2023 Honda Africa Twin DCT

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
— Lao Tzu

They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. It is a simple phrase, repeated countless times throughout history, yet behind those few words lies something much deeper: ambition, uncertainty, courage and the human desire to discover what lies beyond the familiar.

But what does it truly mean to take that first step?

For some, it means starting a new career. For others, leaving behind everything they know and chasing a dream that has lived quietly in their mind for years. Sometimes the first step is not a physical movement at all—it is a decision. A moment when a thought that once seemed impossible suddenly becomes something worth pursuing.

Every great journey begins long before the road appears. It begins with an idea.

The Dream Before The Journey

For years, the thought of riding across Africa existed somewhere in the back of my mind. Not as a simple holiday, not as a short adventure, but as something much bigger—a journey into the unknown. A challenge that would test everything: preparation, patience, endurance and the ability to adapt when things inevitably went wrong.

Africa has always represented something different. A continent of extremes. Endless deserts, ancient cultures, unpredictable roads, incredible landscapes and millions of stories waiting to be discovered. It is a place that inspires curiosity, but also respect. A place where adventure is not something you can simply plan on a map and expect to follow perfectly.

The idea of crossing Africa alone on a motorcycle sounded romantic, but the reality was far more complicated. Dreams are easy. Turning them into reality is where the real journey begins.

From A Thought To A Plan

A motorcycle expedition across Africa is not created overnight. Behind every kilometre ridden are months—and sometimes years—of preparation.

The motorcycle had to be chosen, prepared and trusted. The equipment had to be researched. Routes had to be studied. Borders, visas, insurance, permits, safety concerns and countless small details had to be considered.

Every country brought new questions.

Could I cross this border?
Would the roads be passable?
Where would I find fuel?
What happens if something breaks hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town?
What if I get sick?
What if something goes wrong and there is nobody around to help?

The romantic image of adventure—the open road, the freedom, the landscapes—is only one side of the story. The other side is preparation. The lists, the planning, the research and the countless decisions made before the motorcycle ever moved.

Adventure is not the absence of planning. True adventure depends on it.

The Fear Before The First Step

Every dream carries a certain amount of fear. Before starting something extraordinary, doubts naturally appear.

What if I fail?
What if I am not strong enough?
What if something happens and I cannot handle it?

Those questions are normal. In fact, they are part of the process. Fear exists because the goal matters. The easy choices rarely require courage. Staying comfortable, following the expected path and avoiding uncertainty can feel safe—but they rarely lead to transformation.

The first step is difficult because it means accepting that there are no guarantees. You prepare as much as possible, but eventually there comes a moment when preparation ends and action begins.

Building The Impossible, One Piece At A Time

A journey across Africa was never one giant decision. It was thousands of smaller ones. Learning. Researching. Saving. Preparing. Adjusting. Solving problems. Just like a massive structure is built one brick at a time, an expedition of this scale is created through small actions repeated consistently.

Nature itself reflects this truth. A giant oak begins as a tiny acorn. A river begins as a single drop of water. A mountain is shaped by countless individual moments over time.

The beginning may seem insignificant, but every step creates momentum. One decision leads to another. One challenge prepares you for the next. Slowly, something that once existed only as an idea begins to become real.

Leaving The Familiar Behind

The hardest part was not choosing the motorcycle, packing the luggage or planning the route. The hardest part was accepting that eventually I had to leave.

There is a moment before every great journey when everything is ready—the bike is packed, the documents are organised, the route is planned—and yet you are still standing at the beginning. That moment is filled with excitement and uncertainty. Because once you leave, everything changes.

The comfortable world you know becomes something behind you. Ahead is only the road, the unknown and whatever comes next. And that is exactly why the journey matters.

The Road Ahead

No adventure follows a perfect plan. There will be unexpected problems. There will be difficult days. There will be moments of doubt and exhaustion. But there will also be moments that make every struggle worthwhile.

The first sunrise over a foreign landscape. The kindness of strangers. The feeling of crossing a border into a country you have never seen before. The silence of an empty road. The realisation that you are standing somewhere you once only imagined. Those moments cannot be planned. They have to be earned.

D-day

Prepared and ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime!

The First Step

Every explorer, every creator, every dreamer reaches the same point eventually—the moment when imagination has to become action. The journey of a thousand miles does not begin with certainty.

It begins with courage. It begins with accepting that the road ahead will not always be easy, but choosing to ride anyway. This was my first step. Leaving behind the familiar world and heading into Africa with nothing but a motorcycle, a camera and a dream. Into the unknown.

The journey was about to begin.

I’ll be documenting this adventure along the way — the good, the bad, and everything in between. If you want to ride with me through Africa’s deserts, mountains, chaos, and calm, you can follow the journey on Instagram, and TikTok. I’ll be sharing stories from the road, raw moments, and the reality behind chasing freedom on two wheels.

So, come along for the ride — the long way through Africa.

Peace!
