Beauty, Dust & Chaos – Riding to Conakry, Guinea 🇬🇳

After my difficult introduction to Guinea, I continued south from Labé toward Mamou. Fortunately, the roads began to improve, and for the first time in a while I could relax slightly and enjoy the ride. The landscape also became more scenic, with green hills, wide valleys and winding roads cutting through some of the most beautiful countryside I had seen in West Africa.

From Mamou to Conakry, the ride became even better. The road was fantastic, the scenery constantly changed and the entire route felt full of life. Villages, roadside markets, pedestrians, motorcycles and local traffic created a steady sense of movement. After the harsher and more isolated roads earlier in Guinea, this section felt energetic, colourful and far more enjoyable.

The closer I came to the capital, however, the more intense everything became. Traffic increased, the roads grew busier and the calm of the countryside gradually disappeared. By the time I reached Conakry, I was already exhausted from the day’s ride.

Crossing the city to reach the place where I was staying turned into a long and chaotic final stretch. Congestion, noise, heat and unpredictable traffic made progress slow, and it felt as though the city continued endlessly. After such a scenic ride through the country, arriving in Conakry was a sharp change of pace.

This journey showed both sides of Guinea. The road from Labé to Mamou revealed the country’s dramatic landscapes, while the route from Mamou to Conakry was one of the most enjoyable and lively rides of the trip. But the final crossing through the capital was draining, and by the time I arrived, I was more than ready to stop.
